The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them. — Patrick Henry

As stated by Patrick Henry with conviction and passion, a democratic government will not last if its operations and policies are not visible to its public. The foundation of our democratic republic is supposed to be based on an open and accountable government. Transparency is what enables accountability.

Civilians attacked, bombed, and cut off from aid in Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), along with stagnant funding for treating HIV/AIDS and ongoing neglect of other diseases, were among the worst emergencies in 2009.
Continuing crises in north and south Sudan, along with the failure of the international community to finally combat childhood malnutrition were also included on this year's list. Excerpts from an e-mail from by Jim Reimer, pastor from the Nelson area, stranded in Haiti with students
January 14. 2010

We arrived at our destination Tuesday, January 12, just 45 minutes before the earthquake struck. We were all in the house, except for Skye. Miraculously the house did not collapse and we were all able to exit, some in various stages of undress. (A few were taking a shower when the quake hit.) Many houses were destroyed in our area with people reporting loss of life and serious injuries sustained.

Students concerned for safety, want to come home

The following are exerpts from an e-mail sent by Pastor Jim Reimer on Jan. 14 regarding his current situation in Haiti.

Communication here is down, information gathering is difficult. We have heard that the centre of the quake was near Port-Au-Prince. There are reports of looting and we are concerned for our safety outside of the confines of Haiti Arise. The students are busying themselves with clean up, as a result of the quake.

News flash – we just got a visit from the UN. They took our information and gave us little news. They said that the road to Port Au Prince was out and travel was not possible. It was best for us to remain here for the time being. Patrick, one of the Canadians here was able to contact the Canadian Embassy and they said that there are thousands of people needing assistance. They cautioned us to patient.

More and more people are seeking refuge at Haiti Arise. The security wall is down around the compound. The longer we are here, the more tenuous our situation becomes. There is no food or fuel distribution taking place at this time and we could soon run out of food. I visited another mission down the road and there up to 2000 people camped there.

Washington Times -Inside the Ring - By Bill Gertz - January 15, 2010

Military commanders throughout Afghanistan have notified U.S. and allied troops to expect the increase in violence and insurgent attacks to continue during the winter, as additional troops begin arriving in the country as part of the Pentagon's latest troop surge.

The Taliban insurgents view the recently announced surge of 20,000 troops as a sign they are winning the conflict and plan to step up attacks with the goal of "bringing the fight" to their enemy, said a U.S. military officer in the region. "They view the surge as a sign of weakness and are being spurred on to step up fighting," the official said.
